They look like giant kaleidoscopes with lights of different colors dancing at the beat of old time Christmas songs in the cool December breeze. These lanterns were the showcase of Ligligan Parul-the Giant Lantern Festival held last December 15, 2012 at Robinsons Starmills, City of San Fernando, Pampanga. 11 Barangays competed for the festival with lanterns measuring 20 ft in diameter with hundreds of thousand light bulbs manually operated by rotors made from cylindrical GI sheet covered with masking tape and attached with hair pins. These lanterns competed in three rounds: first round is an individual show, the 2nd round is in groups 4’s & 3s and the 3rd
round is the “Ligligan Parul”-a showdown of all the lanterns with the accompaniment of two brass bands. After the showdown the winners chosen by a panel of judges that includes the actor Jake Cuenca & some foreign dignitaries were: Barangay Del Pilar-Grand Champion, Barangay Telabastagan-1st Runner Up & Barangay San Jose-2nd Runner Up.
Indeed, The Giant Lantern Festival was a celebration of Kapampangan craftmanship and ingenuity that keeps the bcommunity spirit alive. Maligayang Pasko!
